It's either going to inspire you and make you want to start your creative business right away, or it's gonna make you say "Nope, that ain't for me" but honestly, there's even tips for how to deal with the different areas of it that you don't want to deal with. The book begins with the basics of how to decide if freelancing is a good fit, and then goes into detail building your business from the ground up. Ilasco and Cho are great authorities on this subject because they themselves have turned their own talents into extremely flourishing careers. Ilasco runs a studio by her own name which produces stationery and home products.
She has written a few other books and serves as the creative director of Anthology, a new home and lifestyle magazine. Cho not only runs her own successful stationery business, and writes two blogs [ Creative Inc book fills the void of information for artists wanting to turn their vision to a full time business. The book is written in a casual and straightforward manner, making it a must read for anyone trying to make the jump to freelance or starting a small business. This book is great and very thorough, covering several aspects of freelance and including insights from a great variety of designers.
I love how the book is sectioned off and each focus is described thoroughly for easy understanding.

I appreciate all of the step-by-step checklists, sample invoices, how to know when to get a partner, hire an agent, offer an internship, or, quit. The profiles of real-life successful freelancers are extremely helpful too - they've been there and done that!
I'm keeping this book close at hand, not shelved somewhere hidden, so I can keep flipping open to passages when I'm feeling the "freelancing need", so to speak. After reading Creative, Inc, I realize that I'm not quite ready to start up my own business, but I've learned so much about what to do and not to do that I'm just filing things away, waiting until the time is right.
While it's geared towards people heading into a creative arena, I shared many pieces of information with a mechanic starting his own business and he found it was helpful too! Overall, it the book was matter-a-fact you have to plan, expect to work hard and may have some set backs while being very optimistic too. The book helps to make something that seems like an impossible task more manageable by sharing the experiences and advice from other people who are successful freelancers. This is a very accessible book on running a freelance business for creatives.

I do some freelancing work but this year I would like to start selling some of my jewelry so I am going to take a look at this book's sibling, Craft, Inc. When my sister and I run the world, all college students, no matter their chosen field, will take a basic business course as part of the mandatory freshman curriculum.
